Maedhros

Maedhros is the eldest son of Fëanor, born to him and his wife in Tirion. He followed Fëanor throughout his journey loyally, swearing the Oath and participating in the first Kinslaying, but did not do the same in the burning of the Teleri ships, and was one of few who questioned this decision, thinking it best to send them back to bring Fingolfin and his host across the sea. He fought in the Dagor-nuin-Giliath, and took up the title of the High King upon his father’s death, although it remained disputed for some time. He found himself chained to Thangorodrim by his right wrist, bound by a manacle of unbreakable steel. There he hung for many years until Fingon with the help of the Lord of the Eagles rescued him, forced to cut off his right hand.

To heal the rift between the houses of Fëanor and Fingolfin, he gave up the title of High King of the Noldor and passed it to Fingolfin, his uncle. He moves his people to the east of Beleriand, where he builds the fortress of Himring upon a high hill. The lands around it come to be known as the March of Maedhros. After the Dagor Aglareb, he kept a close watch upon Angband during its siege, and continued to do so until Morgoth broke the siege in the Dagor Bragollach. After the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, Maedhros and his kin retreated southward to Ossiriand, where they took up residence.
Once Lúthien died, the Silmaril that she wore went back to Dior, the new King of Doriath, and with the convincing of Celegorm, the brothers went and attacked after a demand was refused. The cruelty of Celegorm’s men astounded him when they placed the two children in the forest to starve, and he tried to search for them, but to no avail. Elwing succeeded in escaping with the Silmaril, and Maedhros realized that, and thus Maedhros and Maglor, the two remaining sons, attacked the Mouth of Sirion, but once more failed to obtain the Silmaril. They found Elrond and Elros together, and they became almost like fathers to the little half-elves. But after the War of Wrath, Maedhros convinced Maglor to go after the remaining 2 Silmarils, and they succeeded, and left for Tol Himring together, but upon nearing the shore, the Silmarils burned their hands, and both brothers threw the jewels into the sea and earth respectively, Maedhros having stayed behind a few leagues and found a chasm, and contemplated throwing himself in, although Maglor had showed up eventually, urging him to throw in the jewel, which he did. They continued their journey, and they made it to Tol Himring, where Maedhros has his permanent residence, although he still wanders around Middle-earth sometimes, seeing Elrond on occasion. During the Last Alliance and War of the Ring, Maedhros and Maglor were involved, fighting the influence of evil where they could, but away from the public eye. And the Fourth Age of the world began; they still remain on the Earth, searching for a way to completely make up for their sins and the cruel acts they committed against their fellow Elves.
